Problem Gambling
Does it touch you or someone close to you?
The costs of problem gambling are high, and affect not only the finances of the gambler and his/her family, but also the mental and physical well-being of everyone involved.
Up to 5% of gamblers experience harmful consequences as a result of gambling. Recent news reports say that these individuals contribute up to 36% of casino revenue.
Often individuals and their families do not make a connection between gambling and health issues.
Some possible clues:
Stress-related ailments like anxiety, depression, headaches, low back pain, GI complaints, insomnia, chest/stomach pains
Emotional – Feeling withdrawn from family/friends, depression, hopelessness, worry, tension, defensiveness, self-harm
Behavioural - Gambling talks, secretive, changes in sleep, eating, sexual habits, missing work/school
Financial - Money unaccounted for, unpaid bills, RRSP’s cashed, 2nd job but no improvement in finances
