About Addictions
What are addictions? Many individuals struggle with addiction issues in our stressful, fast-paced society. While opinions on what constitutes addiction vary widely, my preference is for Peele’s broad approach which defines it as “a comforting but artificial and self-consuming relationship with something external to self”. Our life experiences and our response to them can determine whether we come to depend on an outside activity or substance for relief, and whether that dependence spirals out of our control over time.
The most common addictions are…
- Alcohol & drugs (e.g. cocaine, heroin, marijuana)
- Gambling
- Work
- Shopping
Ellen works with clients experiencing addictions to help them strengthen and develop resources, both internal and external, so that they can lead the life they desire. She respectfully accepts and meets each client as they are at this moment in their life. Together they begin the healing journey towards a balanced life. This journey cannot be rushed. It is a process of becoming reacquainted with oneself.
She also can help family members who are affected by someone’s addictions… find that working with Ellen validates the feelings of confusion they are experiencing. Discussions and skill building exercises help them to interact with the addicted person in ways that support the addicted individual and empower both parties.
